Travel to Crete, Greece as a naturist

Written by Peter Terp. Posted in Country guide, Hotel Vritomartis - Crete,Greece 2012, Naturist resorts and accommodation, Nudist guides

This is a short post about Crete and naturism. I have done some research before going to Crete, and I will of course write even more when I have visited Crete.

What to see

My wife has written a short guide about what to see on the Southern part of Crete where we are going to stay. You can read Lises guide “What to see on Southern Crete”. I have also written a small guide to the small Village Hora Sfakion.

I have also written a range of naturist beach guides

Where to stay

There isn’t a lot of possibilities for accommodation on Crete as a naturist, but I don’t think it matters. We found a place called Hotel Vritomartis and it seems like a really good place to stay. THe hotel is a Naturist Hotel / Naturist resort – we are going to stay in a Bungalow, but it is also possible to stay at the hotel.

Small guide to Hora Sfakion, Crete, Greece

Written by Peter Terp. Posted in City / Place guide, Hotel Vritomartis - Crete,Greece 2012

Hora SfakionHora Sfakion is sometimes called the capital of the unspoilt Sfakia area. This is one of the most mountainous areas of Crete. Hora Sfakion is located around the White Mountains range. The mountains is really high and posses many impressive and fantastic gorges. The most famous of the gorges is the Samaria Gorges.

The village consist of aprox 500 inhabitans and has a very traditional and authentic and calm atmosphere, which is only interrupted a few times in the afternoon by the arrivals of hikers coming from the Samaria Gorge. The hikers tend to leave the village very quickly so peacefulness comes back in a few minutes.

In the village
There are a some excelent restaurants at the seafront, and there is plenty of simple accommodation. There is several pebbled beaches near the city, where it is possible to relax and bath

Naturist accommodation
The naturist Hotel Vritomartis is about 1 km from the city center of Horas Sfakion. The hotel has a really good reputation, and has existed since 1989. The hotel is on walking distance to the naturist beach Filaki.

Getting there
The village Hora Sfakion is about 70 km. away from the somewhat more famous town of Chania. You can reach the city by car, taxi, bus or boat.

If you are going by car or taxi from Chania it will take 1½ hours to get there.

You can find a timetable for the boat here Boat timetable

5 Questions to naturist Hotel Vritomartis

Written by Peter Terp. Posted in Hotel Vritomartis - Crete,Greece 2012, Naturist resorts and accommodation

What is Vritomartis
Vritomartis takes its name from an ancient Minoan Goddess who was much-revered and worshipped in the area of Crete where Vritomartis is situated.

What makes your place different

  • Our unique location, the white mountains from the back which the highest point is 2000m and the sea on the front. A unique spot and landscape. I am sure you will agree with me once you drive to Vritomartis passing the mountains and starting going down to Sfakia…
  • Another advantage is that offers both naturist pool and private naturist beach. Of course don’t forget great weather, sun and mediterranean sea plus mediterranean food…
  • Whether somebody want to stay for a few days or few weeks, want complete peace and quiet or some gentle activities, we are very proud to say that our resort is a very good option. In general is a value for money choice. We are a 3 star hotel but our guest can enjoy many of the 4 star hotels comforts.
    When to visit Crete?
  • Crete can be visited all around the year but the season that is great is from April until November. Of course July – August is the high season with lots of tourists. You will staying in Sfakia and you won’t really see that. Sfakia is a remote area for those who’re looking more quite and less touristic places. Like this are all the south coasts

How do you see the future of naturism and nakations?
I think naturism that is having rest in its natural state has a great future. Modern civilized people are too overstretched by crazy pace of life in big cities. They can not and do not know how to relax. But the nature of human requires that. That’s why so much people wait and expect their next holiday. One of the bounds and constraints is clothing. Discard clothing – and you will feel relieved. All that’s stopping you are only complexes, educations, manners. More and more people understand that and take pleasure in staying naked. To be civilized – it does not mean to be in prison of your clothes.

What is your expectations for Vritomartis future?
Our aim is to offer our guests their “Dream Holiday”. We treat every single traveller as a unique person and we’re trying to offer the best possible service. We’ve been hosting travellers from all around the world for over 20 years now and we want to keep on doing this for the next years with the same passion and loyalty. We strongly beleive that the best way to communicate with our customers is in person so we do this while they’re staying at Vritomartis.

What to see on Southern Crete

Written by Lise Kryger. Posted in Blog, Hotel Vritomartis - Crete,Greece 2012

Crete, Greece

– what to see and do for me and my family?

My family and I, which consists of father, mother and a son of 4 years old, are planning a trip to Crete, more specifically Hora Sfakion, southern Crete. Before we leave, I have set myself to examine what there is to see in the southern part of Crete. We will be staying at Hotel Vritomatis located in Hora Sfakion, and that will be my starting point from what to see around.

We usually travel in our need to experience, but experience tells me that the more we know about the region and its possibilities before we arrive, the more we feel our variety of options are when we are choosing excursions on our trip.

Hora Sfakion is a small peaceful village with a small harbor. It lies completely south, tucked away from mass tourist in the north. Hora Sfakion is situated in a wild and rich natural area of mountains (White Mountains) that reach all the way down to the Libyan Sea..

East of Hora Sfakion is a Venetian fortress from the 13th century located – Frangokastello. I believe that would be an exciting area to take our boy out to look at.

From the port of Hora Sfakion, ferries sails to other southern villages. There could be some interesting routes that can give us a good impression of southern Crete, seen from the sea. We like to visit small villages from the sea as if the experience of the city always are just a little more impressive that way.

The White Mountains range right down to the water. The highest point is 2450 meters high and are covered by snow half of the year. There should be some of Europe’s most exciting gorges that would be interesting to experience. For instance the Samaria Gorge, in the national park Lefka Ori, with its 16 km. long gap would be an adventure.

Crete’s southern mountains are dotted with small traditional villages, where there should be opportunities to buy local olive oil and thyme honey. I love honey and I love to experience everyday life in villages with local markets and usually lots of atmosphere. All their fresh foods are so tempting… tomatoes, onions, feta, fish and not to forget their spices fresh or dried.

On our trips around in the southern Crete, we will keep a close eye on small brown signs by the road, allegedly to inform us of museums and monasteries. Especially monasteries, as I’m sure that from my son’s eye height will grow into fortresses and strongholds and awaken his imagination about life and great conquests, while we, my husband and I will put ourselves in the place of origin and use and allow ourselves to be back in time and place .

No Greece without beaches. No sun and heat without beaches. No one in our family will certainly experience Greece without also throw us on the beaches. Basically, we are interested in all the beaches. We will experience the island and when we come to a beautiful or exciting beach we will stop and go down and take us for a swim.

There are few official naturist beaches in Crete but many places tolerate it. Especially in remote and quiet beaches and coves. Most are located in the southern part of Crete. At our Hotel Vritomatis there is a small naturist beach called Filaki, – we will of course visit it.

Here are some naturist beaches we will consider visiting:

  • Paleochora
  • Sougia
  • Agia Roumeli
  • Agios Pavlos
  • Sweet Water Beach (Glykarnera)
  • Plakias
  • Komos Beach.

Video: Guest interviews at Vritomartis, Greece

Written by Peter Terp. Posted in Hotel Vritomartis - Crete,Greece 2012, Videos

Vritomartis is a naturist resort in Greece – the name comes from the acnient Minoan Goddes. The god was worshipped and much-revered and in the area of Crete where Vritomartis is situated. Vritomartis has made these guest interviews, which I think is a good idea. I have never been at the naturist resort Vritomartis – but thought that the videos could give some kind of inspiration. I know that the videos are selected by Vritomartis and therefore should have it in mind when you make an assessment of the resort.
